Dan Kosick in Tough Mudder

Team A Step Ahead’s Dan Kosick recently completed the Tough Mudder competition. In Dan’s own words:

“Hi Erik, Gwyeth and Amy,

I just wanted to let you know that the Tough Mudder went real well this past weekend. I had no issues with any of the obstacles, No physical or prosthetic issues, it took me and my team almost 4 hours to complete but I did have to walk most of the last 3 miles due to my socket being partially filled with mud and water. Every time I tried to run towards the end of the event I would get about a few hundred yards and my leg would just become so sloppy I would need to stop to push it on. I never tried taking it off and putting it back on because I was just so muddy and wet from start to finish that I don’t think I would have been able to ever get it back on.

All in all it was an awesome event and supper fun. I am already thinking about planning another one. I have some decent pics and some videos. I’ll try and send you some soon. Below is a picture from the finish line.

Thank you for all your support! I think the leg survived for the most part. I’ll probably try a run in a few days and I’ll see if there seems to have been any prosthetic damage (hopefully not).

Dan”

Congrats on the race from all of us, Dan!

Year-Round Climbing Program for the Disabled at New Groundbreaking Climbing Facility in Somerville Area

SOMERVILLE, MA (July 2013) Boston Adaptive Climbing kicks off their year round programming with free climbing at Brooklyn Boulders-Somerville located at 12A Tyler Street, Somerville, MA on August 3, 2013.

Brooklyn Boulders-Somerville will be the first climbing facility opening to include climbing for the disabled in their regular programming as a forethought. Brooklyn Boulders LLC has been in partnership with NYC Adaptive Climbing since its inception in March 2012 as it provides accessible climbing for its customers in the New York Metro area.

“We are excited to bring adaptive climbing to Boston…… we have received many messages from the Boston metro community all year long about putting this programming here and we are glad our gym partners, Brooklyn Boulders, has given us the opportunity to do just that.” says Founder, Kareemah Batts.

Boston Adaptive Climbing is an extension of NYC Adaptive Climbing providing accessible  indoor/outdoor climbing opportunities for people with disabilities in these metro areas. NYCAC has appointed Boston native Bonnie Denis as Boston area Coordinator for the new programming. Her passion for teaching other disabled individuals like herself to climb connected her with the constituents at Brooklyn Boulders and NYC Adaptive Climbing.

Their message that “anyone can climb” reaches new heights after their recent announcement for New York City’s American with Disabilities Act Sapolin Award to be given to them by Mayor Bloomberg on August 5, 2013.  On the heels of their nomination they were given the opportunity to present their introduction to Boston at Brooklyn Boulders-Somerville’s grand opening week August 3, 2013 from 2pm-6pm

“Brooklyn Boulders’ mission is to bring climbing to everyone. Sharing that passion is a prime reason for us to exist. We are beyond excited to be hosting and supporting the Boston Adaptive Climbing group at our facility in Somerville. Kareemah and Bonnie are both inspiring to us and our community.”- Gavin Heverly, Brooklyn Boulders, LLC Chief Operating Officer.

NYC Adaptive Climbing was founded by Kareemah Batts, an amputee since 2009 after her diagnosis of Synovial Sarcoma a rare and often fatal cancer. Since then she has become the first female para-climber in a U.S. climbing competition and has been an avid advocate for cancer survivors, fighters and disabled individuals.
